»ECO-INNOVATION IS A PROFITABLE ACTIVITY« INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ECO-INNOVATION
Portorož, 1st of October 2010 – An international conference on eco-innovation, prepared together with the partners from seven Mediterranean countries in the frame of the Medossic project was organised by Regional Development Centre Koper in Portorož, Slovenija. The project is aimed at strengthening the cooperation between the economy, public institutions and other support organisations in the eco-innovation field. Although Slovenija already has some exceptional eco-innovations is still falling behind in the efficiency of the support environment. The Spanish case of organization in this field can be taken as an example for future development. With attendance and conference contribution the partners want to contribute to an improvement of the regional politics in the field of eco-innovation and above all in strengthening the eco-innovation culture.
Technological Environmental Centre Koper presented a project partly financed by a European programme for eco-innovation about conversion of paper mill silt into a highly technological product. In the last ten years they managed to develop a special technology which transforms the paper mill silt into absorbent for surface water treatment. It’s a useful absorbent for oil, chemical and similar industries. The solution is also applicable to public services when treating the consequences of accidental discharges of dangerous substances. As the director Marko Likon said they have proven that ecology is not necessarily an expense, it can also be a profitable activity as they have proven with their market entry. With a partner company they are developing an eco-innovation for the material utilization of biological mud for the production of building composites. With the so called BACOM technology recycling as well as reuse of the biological mud will be rendered possible.
The port of Koper presented a system to encourage the employees to innovativeness and inventiveness. A systematic approach to development from the year 1988 enabled the introduction of many minor technical improvements. The employees are encouraged by financial rewards and actual introduction of the proposed improvements into the everyday practice of the company.
At the conference attention was also dedicated to good practice cases from the eco-innovation support environment.
The Spanish case of cooperation through a non profit organisation RETA already gives first results. Support centres in eight Andalusian provinces create a network. The network provides direct support to the innovators, it is free of charge, it acts as a financial support for the research and development and offers support with innovations insurance. The network developed many programs which are adapted to the needs of economic subjects. Among their programs the free of charge support to the micro, small and middle enterprises on which the Andalusia economy is based should be pointed out. Also networking is an important program since they connect the enterprises from the field of furniture, textile, and ceramics... in common developmental and technological projects. Above all they stimulate the market by coupling the offer and demand from the development field. The financing of the RETA network is through different European Union sources and state founds.
Strategic and operational plans for the eco-innovation support in each of the partner regions are one of the results of the Medossic project. Partners from Italian region Marche presented their strategic and operational plan for le Marche region developed by their science and technology park TechnoMarche.
There were more than 30 participants at the conference, among them representatives of support organisations, enterprises interested in eco-innovation and project partners from Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Monte Negro and Slovenija. Among the project partners three of them come from Slovenija: Regional Development Agency of the Inner Karst Region from Pivka who is the lead partner in the project, Developmental centre Novo mesto and Regional development centre Koper, which organised the conference.
